Observation Narrative
Plot location: Northwest River Park. Near Molly Mitchell Trail, on a major tributary of Smith Creek, ca. 0.8 miles west of Indian Creek Rd. Bridge over Smith Creek Plot. Center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Hummock and hollow microtopography.
Nutrient Regime: Eutrophic.
Plot is located upstream on one of the small, short tributaries of the Northwest River watershed. Hydrology here is primarily that of a riverine backswamp, with perhaps occasional inundation by exceptionally high wind tides. Soils are alluvial silts and clays washed from adjacent uplands. The vegetation here is characterized by high floristic diversity. Green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) is the dominant canopy species, while Carex bromoides is a prevalent herb on the hummocks.
